I heard Maggie sing this in !969. She was 70yr; I am now 70yr, it certainly seems strange. she was so old back when I was 23. this song was a man who had to be some place where he wasn't wanted. Kentucky, like West Vriginia, was a 'border state' which of course, people who had been good neighbors were not, families who were close were not. this little valley I live in was Southern sympathizer leaning. the parallel valley where my grandmother Sharp leaned toward Union. Amos McCarty b1869 told me that there were Georgia regulars camped where I live. "It was bad that winter that some of them died out". they may have gotten tired of carrying their blankets, being used to warm weather.....

there is a small valley nearby that has a ridge called "the horse ridge" where the local folks hid their livestock from the troops who were camped here or moving through.
