about

there is that well know photo of the old Hammons brothers in front of an old log cabin. Parris [b late '50s] with the 40-65 Winchester model 1886.

to Parris right is brother Pete [b early '60s]. that is not a fiddle. it is a viola ?? Ralph Roberts WVa fiddler and part of that Hammons family said, "they called him 'Big Mouthed Pete'."

to Parris' left is Neal [b early '60s] has the gramophone on his lap. it was said that Neal hade to opposite "turn" from Pete. Neal's son Currence Hammons said that he had learned that song from his grandmother on the Williams River ... where Jesse Hammons brought his family from Whtley County KY in the late 1850s. so Currences grandmother would have been Jesse's wife.

I hardly knew Currence, but Gerry Milnes let me hear a story Currence told. it would have been Jesse who had moved into this forever virgin forest of Pocahontas/Webser Counties like it was in KY when the Hammons first went there in. mid 1700s.. there were only animal paths to travel.

this is close to his story. Jesse was outside chopping wood. he heard several 'clicks'. looked around "and there was blue everwhere he looked". The weapons were pointed at him. they soldiers wanted food. all he had was a little bit of corn meal. his wife made some up in a skillet and would just flip it out a window. seems they ate all of his corn meal. anyway, before they left the man in charge told each to give him one of his lead rifle ball. one of the men protested but was told to give it anyway. for the mountain people, lead was often almost impossible to get ahold of.

jesse had been waiting for a man and his son to come across the mountain to go hunting. later the son came in but the father had been captured and I think taken to Camp Chase Prison in Ohio..

there are other stories I heard from Parris' children about the civil war time. Hiram Herbert then was one of those stories from the border warfare. Here Hiram was in WVa territory.
