about

Otto was born in N.C. However, according to his 'Otto-biography', he caught a freight train and rode it into the WVa coal fields to stay with his uncle.. He said he was about 7 old at the time. you can look up the info on him. I first heard this on my aunt Mabel's victrola . she ['04] lived York County Pa [just across the Yellow Britches Creek from Cumberland Co].l found this record along w/ the WRECK 97.

back in 1990s when there was virtually no work at all, I could pick up a few dollars playing for senior citizens tour groups around first week august. almost all were from PA. they would have gotten on a bus in PA maybe 4am-5am, ridden few hundred miles, driven in the bus through the mountains to see hundred thousand acres of fall foliage. would return in late afternoon to a motel room at the huge Snowshoe Ski Resort. they would be served supper and because of the size, they would not finish up until about 7:30-8pm? and then I was to try to present them some banjo playing w/ singing and filling in with whatever stories or history which fit that evening.

because these groups were from the North, I had to change my dialect or they wouldn't have clue what I was saying. I ran into that while a student at Eastern Mennonite Seminary. we were most all middle aged men and locked into our dialect. I had to change. same with the senior citizen bus tours.

however, over the years, I had one group from North Carolina. I was going to sing this song and remembered N.C. was were Otto was from. I said "Here's a song about a man from your area." and I pronounced it like I had to do for folks from PA. one syllable "Otto" Wood.. they had never heard of him. I knew better because some of these seniors were children when he was killed in 1930. so I said "Otto Wood" w/ a northern proper prouncement. these folks were saying it back and forth to each other...... and then finally someone piped up

"OH!! you mean OUGHT' TOWWWwww WOOD!!!" yep.

at the end, a woman came up
"Do you know if Ought tow Wood was killed in Salisbury North Carolina?"
"Yes, Maam, He was"
"You know when I was just a little girl I was really afraid that Ought tow Wood would come and get me. I remember the night my daddy came in and told me that the po-leese had cornered Ought tow Wood and killed him. .. And you know my life got better after that."
